Laos has about 47 different tribes with different traditions and customs: only half of the population is of lao ethnicity, native to the plain river valleys and closely related to the Lao people of northeastern Thailand. In the high lands, there are lao-thai and lao-theung ethnic groups, distant relatives of the mon-Khmer.

The tribes are part of three main groups: Lao Lum, people of the lowlands; Lao Song, mountain people, and third the Lao Teung or Lao Kang, people of highland.
